PLOT SUMMARY
So Bad, So Good is a beloved YouTube channel where fans and followers can watch a group of friends get drunk & review the trashiest of horror movies. The crew has been in pursuit of “Creepies”, a supposedly cursed film that’s been impossible to track down; some rumors claim that the cast died mysteriously, some people believe that the movie’s infamy caused the cast and crew to go into hiding, while other rumors speculate that viewers experience flashbacks to the film…as if they were characters in the movie themselves. When a bootleg copy of “Creepies” shows up at So Bad, So Good‘s, studio, the crew decides to pop it right into the VCR to see if the film lives up to its cult following. However, they may get more than they bargained for…
MY THOUGHTS
I admittedly am I very big fan of bad horror movies. When I’m sitting on the couch, cruising streaming services for a movie to watch, I’m not exactly in pursuit of Academy Award winners. There’s just something about cheesy, schlocky horror cinema that is so comforting to me. When I came across Bad Movie Night on Kindle Unlimited, I knew I would love it based on the plot description, and I was correct!
Obviously, I connected to the characters in this story because of our shared love of bad horror films. However, I felt incredibly immersed in the story due to the fact that its told from a second person POV. This is a point of view that is rarely utilized in horror fiction, so I found this to be a very interesting choice.
This is a novella, so it’s pretty short, but it packs a big punch. As the story progresses, the lines between fiction and reality become incredibly blurry. As we try to make sense of what’s happening, things only become more and more disorienting. There was a rising sense of dread throughout the book, and by the time I finished I felt like I had a pit in my stomach. While not outwardly terrifying, Bad Movie Night features the kind of horror that creeps under your skin without you even realizing it’s there until it’s too late.
I just had to point out, “Creepies” sounds like a combination of the movies Ghoulies and Skinamarink. I know, that is a VERY odd combination, but I swear it will make sense once you read this book.
Anyways, if you’re like me and you adore low-rated horror cinema, consider checking out Bad Movie Night by Patrick Lacey!
